JerseyFestival of Motoring 2008
|
History of the club The Club was founded by Bob Kirwan, Barry de la Mare and Derek Bonhomme on 2nd November 1966 for the benefit of owners of old motor vehicles in the island of Jersey. Vehicles must be constructed prior to the 1st January 1949 and certain selected models manufactured up to the 31st December 1950. Persons who are interested in, but do not own such vehicles, may apply to become Members. The club has a justifiable reputation for friendliness and informality. The Club issues and circulates a monthly newsletter covering all aspects of the Club's activities, advising of forthcoming events and reporting on events and matters of interest. Members can advertise vehicles for sale to fellow Members. A Gazette is also published twice a year. The objects of the club are: To encourage the ownership of vehicles manufactured prior to 31st December 1950 To provide information and advice on, and encourage the restoration and preservation of old vehicles. To promote and organise events and social gatherings for members To promote the practical and social aspects of motoring within its membership To further the motoring interest of its members generally, and where necessary or desirable to join with persons to that end. To encourage courtesy, good driving and safety on the roads.
During the past 32 years the club has organised a vast number of events both of a motoring and social nature, with the Twelve Churches Cavalcade held on Boxing Day being the most high profile at a local level. The membership has grown to over 200 Members with an estimated 450 vehicles, which comprise of over fifty different marques. From the club's first foray to the continent in July 1973, when 15 cars left for a trip to St. Malo, Members of the club have participated in rallies all over the world, as well as continuing a very close link with the Brittany clubs and Club de L'Auto in Paris.
